Garage Door Repair & Installation in Miami, FL

Modern residential garage door on a Florida home

A garage door is the largest moving object in most homes, and in Miami it is also a structural component. During a hurricane, a garage door that fails does not just cost you a door — it lets wind pressure into the building, and that pressure is what lifts roofs. Florida building code treats garage doors accordingly. We repair springs, cables, openers and tracks, and we install wind-rated replacement doors that meet the requirements for this county.

The single most common call we take is a broken torsion spring. Springs are what actually lift the door; the opener only guides it. A typical spring is rated for somewhere around ten thousand cycles, which for a family using the garage as their main entrance is a handful of years, not a lifetime. When one breaks, the door becomes a several-hundred-pound weight with nothing counterbalancing it — which is why we ask people not to try to force it open, and why spring work is not a safe do-it-yourself repair.

Salt air and humidity are the Miami-specific factor. Rollers seize, hinges rust, cables fray and steel door panels corrode from the inside of the seams faster near the coast than they do inland. A door that gets a few minutes of lubrication and adjustment once a year lasts materially longer here than one that gets none.

On replacements, wind rating is the part that matters most and gets discussed least. Miami-Dade requires garage doors to be approved for this wind zone, and reinforcement and correct anchoring into the jamb are part of that approval — a rated door installed incorrectly is not a rated door. We handle the permitting and install to the approved method.

Frequently asked questions

My garage door will not open and I heard a loud bang. What happened?

That is almost certainly a broken torsion spring, and the bang was it letting go. Do not try to force the door up — without the spring, the full weight of the door is unsupported and it can come down hard. Disconnect the opener if it is straining and call us. It is one of the most common repairs we do and usually a same-visit fix.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs hold an enormous amount of stored energy and the winding process is where people get seriously hurt. It is also easy to fit the wrong spring rate, which quietly destroys the opener over the following months.

Do garage doors in Miami need to be hurricane rated?

For a full door replacement, yes — Florida code requires garage doors to meet the wind-load requirements for their zone, and Miami-Dade applies the strictest standard in the state. The rating depends on the door, its reinforcement, and how it is anchored, which is why installation method matters as much as the product.

How long does a new garage door installation take?

Most single-family installations are completed in a day once the door is on site. Ordering time for a specific wind-rated door in a particular colour and style is usually the longer part of the timeline.

My opener works but the door is loud and jerky. Is that serious?

Usually it is worn rollers, dry bearings or a door that has drifted out of balance — all inexpensive to correct, and all things that shorten the life of the opener if you leave them. Noise is generally the cheapest warning you will get.

Do you service the garage door opener as well as the door?

Yes. We repair and replace openers, realign safety sensors, and set the force and travel limits properly. A surprising number of opener complaints turn out to be a misaligned sensor or an unbalanced door rather than a failed motor.
